Lions announce 2024 leaders
The Seymour Football Netball Club (SFNC) has announced its on-field leaders for the 2024 Goulburn Valley League (GVL) season.
Lachlan Waite and Dylan Scopel will remain as Co-Captains of the Senior side, joined in the leadership group by Jack Murphy, Huw Jones, James Wooster, Nick Dundon, Ben Cooney and Seamus Feery.
The leadership group brings a strong mix of experience and youth, providing different leadership styles to benefit the entirety of the playing group.
Seymour Lions Senior Coach Ben Davey said the group places the young talent of the club in good hands.
“We’re delighted to have a group of incredibly well-respected men leading our club again in 2024,” Mr Davey said.
“Lachlan Waite stepped up last year and did a great job last year alongside Dylan Scopel and has taken on the extra responsibility as our Under 18s Seniors Coach.
“Dylan hit the 200 game mark of the club, has been a great player over a long period of time and is now a Lions and GVL Life Member.
“We’re incredibly lucky to have two fantastic leaders to support our whole playing group in their on and off-field development.”
James Wooster and Ben Cooney are the new faces in the leadership group for the season ahead.
“Both James and Ben play crucial roles in our backline and have a high level of senior football experience despite their young ages,” Mr Davey said.
“Their elevation gives us not just a great spread in terms of styles and age but also covers all areas of the ground.
“We do have quite a young group so we’ll be looking to keep elevating future leaders of the club in the season ahead.
“Everyone is raring to go for 2024. We can’t wait for next weekend.”

Around the ground, the output was consistent with Tom Wardley accumulating possessions to finish best on ground alongside Will Le Deux who has set a high standard since his return. Jay Eager provided fantastic presence in the ruck with strong work rate around the ground, while Nic Davey was able to sneak forward and kick a couple of classy goals. The Lions will be looking to keep their run going against Tatura next weekend. The Lions got off to a superb start in the first term before the play reversed in the second quarter as United got control of the game. Seymour came out strongly after half time with Lewis Lubeck hitting the scoreboard, finishing with 4 goals, and a handy lead in hand going into the final quarter. Despite some tense moments, the Lions got over the line with fantastic performances through the middle from Jack Murphy, James Wooster and Ricky Schraven, well supported by Seamus Feery in a trademark ruck performance. Sam Thomson played a sensational game across half back, standing up when the Lions were under pressure. Australian Trenching & Excavations UNDER 15s Seymour 16 def by United 71 The Under 15s came up against a well drilled Shepp United team but the girls kept their heads high and fought until the end. Sienna Lynch took on the coach’s instruction all game and put feedback into practice with terrific drives off the line for the centre pass and positive movement in the attacking end. The defensive end tried their best all game against a very tall shooting team. Georgia Hadisutanto was strong throughout the game in centre, giving lots of options for the team. Rooks Pizza Award: Georgia Hadisutanto Whistle Award: Sienna Lynch Trawool Shed - Cafe, Cottages & Restaurant UNDER 17s Seymour 31 def by United 35 Paige Cooper was pivotal in the Lion’s game today with her one on one defence outstanding and causing clean turnovers. Ivy Watson was versatile in today’s game, starting in WA but switching into the goal circle when needed. Ivy’s work ethic was second to none. Lilly Kelly worked in the defensive circle and did well finding the body and getting rebounds. The Lions worked hard in this game and gave it their all but Shepp United were stronger today. The girls are excited to bring their all next week. O’Sullivan Builders: Paige Cooper Club Dinner: Ivy Watson O’SULLIVAN BUILDERS B RESERVE Seymour 44 def United 24 Sarah Waite was everywhere in the first quarter, causing mayhem for the Shepp United attackers. There were plenty of gains as a defensive unit and the goaling accuracy was great. Cindy was able to use all 11 players to contribute to the team’s win. Café 96 Award: Layne Lewis Seymour Hardware Group B GRADE Seymour 71 def United 14 It was a great game by the girls, gaining another win after an east start. Ashlyn Webster was a powerhouse in the goaling circle. Our mid court worked hard with lots of turnovers, led by Madilyn Hager. Chloe Butterworth shot very well and moved the ball in the attacking end. A fantastic win in Andy McKenzie’s 250 th game for the Lions. Inari Sushi Award: Chloe Butterworth Beer Auto Group Seymour A GRADE Seymour 62 def United 53 The first quarter proved to be an absolute ripper with great pressure applied from both teams and the scores ended up level heading into the first break. The third quarter saw the Lions effort and intensity rewarded with a 19 goal haul. Ruby Martin and Ally Black connected effortlessly in the goal circle. The last quarter saw the Lions keep their calm and with fantastic team connection were able to take the win with a 9 goal lead.

Jack Radford continued his fantastic start to his career at The Den with a six goal haul, while Will Le Deux made an impressive start to the season in a best on ground performance. Curtis Powell, Nic Davey and Thomas Wardley rounded out the best, just some of the great young Lions coming through the ranks. From the first bounce the result was never in doubt as the Lions dominated the play and through strong pressure created plenty of Euroa turnovers. Cam Osmond kicked his first senior goal for the club early and certainly didn’t look out of place, booting three for the day, with Nathan Fowler and Tom Jeffrey also lively up forward. Jack Murphy put in a best on ground performance with four goals to go with plenty of possessions around the ground. Jesse Brock played his best game for the Lions, completely outclassing his opponent and patrolling the ground with great presence. Nathan Beattie put in a trademark performance, with Darcy Giles providing a spark around the ground and James Wooster building strongly after a delayed start to the season. While Euroa won the last term, the game was over early with the Lions taking bragging rights in the ANZAC round fixture. A great team effort from all.
