Including You UNDER 15s Seymour 21 - Mooroopna 50 Seymour took on a disciplined Mooroopna side but showed some great team connection and set some challenging play for the opposition. Eden Webster made sure the Mooroopna goalers had to work for every ball and goal, strongly backed by Kyra Pearce. Sophie Butterworth and Ivy Watson worked well in goals and Charlotte Bradley also had a solid second half in GS. The Lions created many turnovers but failed to capitalise and convert these to goals. Sienna Lynch showed individual improvement in her mid court game. Overall, it was great to see the girls backing each other up and playing a tough four quarters of netball. Whistle Award: Eden Webster Trawool Shed - Cafe, Cottages & Restaurant UNDER 17s Seymour 21 - Mooroopna 59 Mooroopna proved to be too strong across four quarters in all areas of the court. Ella Zotti worked tirelessly all day with Sophie Munro and Paige Cooper working well in defence, despite the accuracy of the Cats goalers making it difficult. Grace Le Deux shot well in the first half, responsible for 12 of the Lions’ 16 goals. Sophie Allen played hard, even with an injured back while Taylah Mason, Remy Hare and Ivy Watson worked hard in the centre third in what was a tough day out. O’Sullivan Builders Award: Grace Le Deux Rooks Pizza Award: Paige Cooper O’SULLIVAN BUILDERS B RESERVE Seymour 56 - Mooroopna 23 The Lions put together another dominant performance against the Cats, keeping them to just two goals by the first break. Casey Drummond led from the middle with speed and agility, contributing effectively in both attack and defence. Up front, Mia Allen showcased exceptional accuracy in goals, forming a strong partnership with Shona Gesler to consistently add to the scoreboard. The defensive unit also played a crucial role, working tirelessly to create turnovers and send the ball back to the attackers, ensuring a comprehensive team effort in securing victory. Also a huge Happy Birthday to Shona Gesler who celebrated with a win on the weekend. Club Dinner Award: Mia Allen Club Canteen Award: Casey Drummond Seymour Hardware Group B GRADE Seymour 44 - Mooroopna 54 The Lions started with intent and delivered some brilliant netball. Andrea McKenzie, Lyndel Feery and Lucy Zotti were pivotal in driving the ball forward with pinpoint passing accuracy. Georgie Engel and Madi Hager were fierce in defence, out rebounding Mooroopna on many occasions. In the last quarter the Lions lost their intensity and allowed Mooroopna to get momentum to run out with a ten goal win. Inari Sushi Award: Bridie Cantwell Beer Auto Group Seymour A GRADE Seymour 39 - Mooroopna 36 The A Grade game started following a ceremony to mark “Say no to violence” round, including a minute’s silence and an address from Mooroopna’s President. Following this, the action did not disappoint with a tight first quarter between two high quality teams. The Cats then took control of the game, pushing out to a 10 goals lead entering the third. The Lions fought hard in the third to bring the margin back to six goals at the final break with plenty of work still to be done. An incredible 13-4 final term saw the Lions get up by three goals through tireless fight from the full squad. A great way for the girls to finish leading into the Interleague bye. A surge late in the game was not quite enough to get them over the line in another tight contest. The Lions found themselves the best part of three goals down at half time before kicking five goals straight in the third to set up a nail-biting final quarter. The boys pushed to the final siren in what was another great battle with Kyabram. Julian Morgan worked hard across the ground, finding plenty of the ball and kicking three majors. Sam Fuhrmeister continued his consistent start to the season in defence in his 50 th game for the Lions. Through the middle Will Laird and Ishaq Ali are going from strength to strength, well supported by Jaxon Lantzke in the ruck who also kicked a goal for the highlights reel. A rapid start from Kyabram saw them take a 39-point lead into quarter time, courtesy of a seven goal opening term. The contest evened up in the next two quarters as the Lions worked to get back into the game, setting up a huge last quarter. Dave Mundy kicked two in a row to get the boys up and about heading into the break. While the Lions put everything on the line in the final term, kicking four unanswered goals, they just couldn’t quite get another major to even up the contest. Lachlan Waite continued his strong form in the defensive end, racking up intercept possessions and keeping the Lions in the contest early. Nathan Beattie and Jack Murphy remained prolific around the contest, well supported by David Mundy in his return and Jay Eager who lifted in the ruck in the final quarter to push the Lions forward. Seymour is buzzing with the return of AFL legend David Mundy locked in for this Saturday’s match at Kings Park. Mundy, originally recruited from the Seymour Lions in 2003, went on to have one of the most decorated careers in the history of AFL football, holding Fremantle’s all time games record, while only eight players have ever played more games at the highest level. This longevity sits alongside several personal honours, including an All-Australian selection, a Best & Fairest and 120 Brownlow Medal votes. Mundy’s return to Goulburn Valley League (GVL) football against Kyabram this Saturday will mark a big moment for the league with Mundy the most experienced AFL player ever to put the boots on in the competition. Seymour Lions President, Gerard O’Sullivan, said the club was looking forward to a bumper crowd to welcome Mundy home. “This is about as big as it gets in country footy and the whole town is talking about Mundy’s return to The Den,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “You very rarely see players of Dave’s calibre come back and play country footy and to have someone do it for their home club is even rarer. “He’s only one full season out of the AFL so we have no doubt he’ll be in great condition and put on a show for the home crowd.” The Seniors game against Kyabram will kick off at 2pm this Saturday, May 11. “We’re encouraging everyone to get in the gates early and enjoy some of the other action on the day,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “We’ve got netball on from 9 in the morning and footy on from 10 so it’s a great chance to enjoy a great day of action in a welcoming and family friendly environment. “It will be a pretty jam-packed Kings Park over the day so don’t miss the chance to be involved in a great day for country footy. “We look forward to hosting Dave, his family and a bumper crowd through the gates on Saturday.”

The Lions started strongly with Jardine Nai kicking a great goal early in the game. It proved a tight arm wrestle from there with Will Laird leading the charge across the ground with plenty of run and carry and strong defensive pressure. The defenders repelled plenty of defensive 50 entries, with Jack Davey picking up plenty of intercept possessions and Scott McMaster strongly rebounding the footy. Both Ishaq Ali and Harry Palmer provided a strong presence across the ground the keep the ball moving. The Lions got off to a great start in the first quarter with a snap from big man Todd Lawrence getting the boys up and about. Benalla bounced back in the second quarter to make it anyone’s game at half time. A seven goal third term and eight goal final quarter saw the Lions take the game away and record a thumping victory. Jack Murphy and Nathan Beattie continued to dominate in the midfield with Nugget finding plenty of ball around the ground and Murph picking up disposals at will. Tayte Lewis showed trademark determination in the centre, always hard at the footy and tackling with great skill and effort. While the defensive end held up incredibly well it was the forwards who put together some big days. Nathan Fowler presented strongly throughout the day with some great contested marking in the forward 50 and four goals. The star of the show was undoubtedly Riley Mason who dominated the game, with Benalla unable to match his skill in one on one situations or when the ball hit the ground. Often left one on one as the deepest forward, Riley took full advantage, booting eight goals in an awesome display. The boys enjoyed a great feed at the Seymour Club following the game and are stoked to be lacing up the boots with Dave Mundy this weekend. Including You UNDER 15s Seymour 15 - Swans 56 The Shepparton Swans are always a well-oiled outfit, and it proved to be a tough start to the day for the Lions, who were forced to play catch up after a big first quarter. Eden Webster was the stand-out player on the court, leading from the back with strong defensive pressure in the ring and great transition out of defence. Sophie Butterworth showed her versatility, playing at both ends of the court, and used her speed and height to feed the ball to Isabel and Ivy. While it was a tough encounter for the Lions, there will be plenty of lessons learnt and some great opportunities to work on a better performance next week against the Bears. Club Dinner Award: Eden Webster Trawool Shed - Cafe, Cottages & Restaurant UNDER 17s Seymour 24 - Swans 62 The Lions got out of the blocks quickly with a great first quarter and silky passages of play, and they were right in the game at quarter time. Unfortunately, a 20-goal second quarter from the Swans put Seymour on the back foot and in a difficult position to recover from. The midcourters came back after halftime with plenty of drive, supported by a defensive team that worked well under pressure. The last quarter saw the Lions bring a stronger overall team effort, with the goalers working tirelessly to make the most of their opportunities. David Mundy will return to where it all began, donning the Seymour Lions jumper on May 11 against Kyabram in a blockbuster Round 6 Goulburn Valley League clash. The Lions announced the signing of the 376 game Fremantle superstar in December last year, originally recruited from Seymour in 2003. Mundy boasts an illustrious CV, All Australian in 2015, Best & Fairest winner in 2010, Fremantle Captain in 2016, 120 Brownlow Medal votes and the ninth most AFL/VFL games in history. Seymour Lions President Gerard O’Sullivan said the club was set for a huge day to welcome home the club’s finest player. “There’s been a massive buzz around the club since we announced Dave was returning to The Den and we’re stoked to have a date in the calendar for his homecoming,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “Dave has been keen to do this for a while now and is looking forward to putting the Lions jumper on once again. “It will be an amazing day for the club, hopefully a big crowd and plenty of support for Dave and his family.” The Lions are working through the season fixture to lock in further games with Mundy. “This certainly isn’t a one-off and we’re probably looking at several games this season that line up with Dave’s other commitments,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “We’re hoping to be in a position in the coming weeks to announce a couple more appearances at Kings Park throughout the middle of the season. “Dave has really been driving this with us and it just goes to show what a quality person he is, looking to give back to his junior club and the Seymour community. “We can’t wait to welcome him and his family to Kings Park and see him put on a show for the Lions faithful.”

Hugh Murphy played a great game, dominating the ruck contest with Cooper Holdsworth-Rose presenting strongly as a key link between the midfield and the forward line. Taiten Thomas set the standard with his tenacious attack on the footy. A big thank you to all the boys who helped Tatura out, with three players a quarter trading the Lions jumper for a Bulldogs one. A selfless effort to help get a full game going Go Dynamic Group Award: Tom Wardley CWM Award: Josh Porter Canteen Award: Hugh Murphy Dinner Award: Cooper Holdsworth-Rose O'Keefe's IGA Seymour Reserves Seymour 11.13.79 v Tatura 4.5.29 The Reserves side had a few new faces on the weekend, including some players making the jump up from the 18s last year which was pleasing to see. After a tight first quarter the Lions kicked away in the second and didn’t let Tatura back in the game. The midfield trio of Max McLean, Tayte Lewis and Liam Hockley ensured Seymour forwards had plenty of opportunities to put a score on the board while denying Tatura deep forward entries. Sam Fuhrmeister played a superb game across half back, providing run and repelling Tatura’s forward advances. Up forward Julian Morgan took full advantage kicking four goals to lead the scoring charts. A great way to kick off 2024. Seymour Club Seniors Seymour 10.12.72 v Tatura 11.9.75 With a few senior regulars unavailable to open the season, there were some fantastic opportunities for new faces to stake their claim for a regular spot, including a massive six debutants. The Lions got off to a bit of a wayward start in front of the goals before putting together some great footy in the second and third quarters. Tom Maloney showed why he’s going to be a player to watch this season, combing well with the midfield group. Jack Murphy and Ben Rigoni picked up where they left off in 2023, alongside Ricky Schraven. Riley Mason provided a great target up forward, incredibly well supported by Lewis Lubeck and Will Le Deux. Curtis Powell also stepped up from the thirds with none of them looking out of place Momentum proved hard to hold onto in the last quarter against a hard working Tatura outfit. In a nail biting finish, Tatura managed to snatch the points with a goal after the siren. Some huge positives to come out of the game with a young group and lots to work on when we return to the field against the Swans away in a fortnight.

Nick Dundon will be looking to go one better this season as he takes the reins of the Seymour Football Netball Club (SFNC) Reserves side for the second time. The Lions went through the Home and Away season undefeated before coming up short against Shepparton United at Deakin Reserve on Grand Final Day. The SFNC Reserves side has featured at the pointy end of the season regularly in recent times, including a premiership in 2019. Seymour Lions President Gerard O’Sullivan said Dundon took to the role incredibly well in 2023. “Nick did a fantastic job last season with a young group of players, albeit one with plenty of senior footy experience,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “To have someone like Nick, who has high-level laying experience and is still relatively young, is a big boost for our boys. “Nick will be pulling on the boots this season following a knee reconstruction so we’re looking forward to seeing him put in plenty of work on and off the field. “He played a massive role in the success of our overall football program last season and we’re confident that last year’s coaching experience will hold him in good stead this season.” Nick Dundon said the entire playing list was looking to improve on last year’s results. “Everyone around the club is hungry to have a big season after a bit of a disappointing end in September,” Mr Dundon said. “We’ve got a really close group of players who are only going to get better the more they play together. “Across the entire playing list, there’s a high percentage of boys with senior playing experience which really helps build depth into our Reserves. “I’m looking forward to pulling the boots on again while supporting the development of our younger players.”

As of this season, the player who wins the Seymour Lions’ Senior Best & Fairest will be awarded the Gary Brown Medal, following the endorsement of the proposal at a recent committee meeting. Gary Brown served as Secretary of the SFNC for 34 years (1989-2022), a period of time that included four senior premierships, headlined by a three-peat between 2005 and 2007. Across 34 years of service, Brown worked alongside nine Presidents. Seven of these Presidents gathered at the Royal Hotel for lunch in Seymour last week to pass on some special news. The Seymour Lions Best & Fairest award was previously named after the late Mark Cox, President of the SFNC from 1993-1997. Mark’s son Paul also served as President in the early to mid-2000s, and while he was unable to join in person, he dialled into the lunch with Brown and the seven other living Presidents. Paul Cox fully endorsed the renaming of the Best & Fairest award to Brown, citing the record-breaking volunteer service he gave to the club over three and a half decades. Current President, Gerard O’Sullivan, organised the lunch and said the recognition was fitting for such a selfless and club-focused man. “It’s hard to find the right way to recognise someone who gave so much to our club and played such a huge role in getting us to where we are today,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “There wouldn’t be many people who have more love or passion for the Lions than Browny. “Our volunteers are the people that make our club what it is and this is the perfect way to commemorate Browny’s dedication to the club for generations to come. “We look forward to sharing the importance of this renamed award with our club and the broader Seymour community.”

Seymour President Gerard O’Sullivan congratulated Cooper on the incredible achievement. “Getting this fantastic opportunity is a testament to the work Cooper has put in over the course of his football career, particularly over the last 12 months,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “Cooper is an impressive young man and very well deserving of this selection. This is a great pathway to be on for Cooper to take his football as far as possible. “Everyone at the club is super proud of Cooper, and we can’t wait to watch his development through his last year of underage football.” Seymour Under 18s Coach Lachlan Waite said Cooper’s selection was providing inspiration to the young footballers around the club. “It’s great for our junior footballers to see what’s possible with a lot of hard work and determination,” Mr Waite said. “Cooper has shown that by putting together strong form at a club level there’s potentially higher honours of offer. “Pretty much every professional footballer in the nation comes through this pathway and we hope to see Cooper playing the great football we know he’s capable of for both Seymour and the Bushrangers this season.”

Seymour’s Nic Quigg is set to take the next step in his footballing career following his signing with the GWS Giants VFL side. The move will mean a relocation to Sydney for Quigg, following his first full season of senior football in 2023. Quigg made his way through junior football in dominant fashion before captaining the Murray Bushrangers in the NAB League and finishing second in their Best & Fairest in 2022. He went on to make his debut in the VFL for the Coburg Lions last season, playing most of the year with the Seymour Lions. The move will allow Quigg to train with some of the best footballers in the nation in a professional environment. Seymour President Gerard O’Sullivan said the club was incredibly proud of Quigg’s achievements. “Nic was an outstanding junior footballer and we’re looking forward to him taking another huge step in his career,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “While it’s a shame to lose Nic around the club, we couldn’t be happier to see him take this opportunity, and we have no doubt he’ll make the most of it. “To go into a VFL setup and professional environment will be a big change but a massive progression for Nic’s football.” While Quigg is expected to be in Sydney for the majority of the season the club is holding out hope for a couple of appearances at the Lions in 2024. “Nic has listed Seymour as his home club, so hopefully, if the chance arises, we can sneak him in for a couple of games this year,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “We’ve got a great young midfield and several boys with VFL experience, which is only going to make the club stronger. “We wish Nic all the best. He’s a great young kid, and we can’t wait to follow his performances from afar this year.”

The Seymour Lions have announced their A Grade netball squad following trials held over recent months. The team remains largely unchanged from last year, with the Lions looking to bounce back strongly following a straight-set ousting in the 2023 finals series. Pre-season training looked a little different for the Seymour Lions on Monday, with the club’s footballers spotted running around town following last week’s heavy rainfall and flooding. Thankfully, the town did not see a repeat of the October 2022 floods, with businesses and homes in evacuation zones sandbagged and well-prepared. Following the Goulburn River returning to below flood level, people across town were left with sandbags and no means to dispose of them. That’s where the Seymour Lions stepped in, with pre-season training turning into a town-wide clean-up job, picking up and disposing of sandbags at the SES centre. “We’re thinking of everyone that was impacted by flooding and are incredibly thankful the river didn’t rise to the predicted level,” Seymour Lions President Gerard O’Sullivan said. “Once the waters receded, we identified as a club that a lot of people had sandbags they didn’t know what to do with. “Rather than a normal pre-season training session we thought it would be a great idea to get the footballers out in the community and help people dispose of their sandbags.” The Lions organised tipper trucks for Monday night and got to work. “A few of the great tradies associated with the club took the time to get their heavy vehicles into action and watched the footballers get to work,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “Not only does the town look a lot tidier following the clean up we put some extra miles in the legs of our players. “The players split into two groups and ran roughly eight kilometres each, picking up bags from businesses and homes across town. “Everyone is looking forward to a new season of football and netball and we’d like to thank the Seymour community for their ongoing support.”

In addition to his Seymour football career, Waite has underage experience representing the GVL, Murray Bushrangers and Victoria Country and has been supporting the Seymour Under 18s off-field over the past two years. Seymour Football Manager Mitch Itter said the club was looking forward to seeing Waite take the next step in his football journey. “We’re absolutely delighted to have Lachy coaching our thirds boys this season. He has a great relationship with the playing group and has played some really high-quality footy at a young age,” Mr Itter said. “Lachy is a great person to have around the club and as the senior captain it’s fantastic to see him stepping up again this season. “Clint Rose did a fantastic job last season and we’re excited to see further growth in our future senior footballers. “Lachy will be supported by Chris Martin in an Assistant Coach role which is another super acquisition for the club.” Lachy Waite is encouraging all prospective players to get in touch with pre-season set to commence for the Under 18’s on Wednesday 24 January. “I’m really looking forward to working with the thirds this season. We’ve got some promising players coming through the ranks and it’ll be incredibly rewarding to support their development,” Mr Waite said. “I’ll be continuing the welcoming and fun environment Clint has established in the Under 18s and pushing the boys to prepare themselves for senior football. “Our senior side is massively geared towards local players and the thirds boys of today are our future champions. “I’d encourage everyone looking to play a high standard of junior footy to come to training, get the feel of our fantastic club and get ready for a huge 2024 at Kings Park.”

The Seymour Football Netball Club (SFNC) is delighted to announce the signing of 376-game AFL superstar David Mundy for the 2024 Goulburn Valley League (GVL) season. Mundy was recruited from Seymour as pick 19 in the 2003 AFL Draft, going on to enjoy an illustrious career as one of the competition's top midfielders over two decades. Among a range of incredible achievements in his AFL career, Mundy is Fremantle’s all-time games record holder and only eight men have played more games in the history of the competition. Mundy was an All-Australian in 2015, won Fremantle’s Best and Fairest in 2010 and captained the club in 2016. SFNC President Gerard O’Sullivan said the club is excited to welcome Mundy home in what is a huge boost for the club. “It’s an amazing signing for the club and we can’t wait to see Dave back at Kings Park where it all began,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “Dave is an incredibly humble person and has made clear for a while his desire to come back to Seymour and get back to country footy. “Having one of the most experienced footballers in the history of the game trotting round in the GVL is going to be a great boost for our club and the competition more broadly. “We saw when he hung up the boots there was still plenty left in the tank. There’s no doubt he’ll be giving a few opposition coaches headaches in 2024.” Mr O’Sullivan said Mundy would fit into a strong midfield ready to go deep in September. “We’ve got a great young side with plenty of room to improve after a bit of a disappointing finals series last year,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “Mundy will slide into our midfield nicely and will no doubt be passing on some important lessons to our boys. We’ve got some young players who already have VFL experience and it will be huge for their development to play alongside a legend of the game. “There’s a really strong bond in our current team and an exciting vibe around the club. I’d encourage everyone to get around the Lions in 2024 in what will be a huge year for us. “We’re looking forward to welcoming Dave, Sally and his family to the club. They’re top quality people and it’ll be great to have them around.”

Tom comes to the Lions with a strong CV, as a premiership player with VFL side, the Box Hill Hawks, in the 2018 season as well as TAC Cup experience with the Sandringham Dragons. Tom is an inside midfielder who possesses elite skills and stoppage craft and will slide straight into Seymour’s midfield group, providing leadership and a strong football IQ. Seymour Football Manager Mitch Itter said the signing was a boost for the club heading into pre-season training. “It’s super pleasing to have Tom on board for next year. He’ll add a great deal of skill and experience to our strong midfield group,” Mr Itter said. “He’s played incredibly strong football across his whole career, and we have no doubt he’ll hit the ground running in the GV. “To have players like Tom, Ben Rigoni and Nathan Beattie playing in our midfield, all with VFL experience, bodes well for next season. “We’re excited to see Tom on the track and the boys will welcome him with open arms to The Den.” The SFNC pre-season will kick off at Kings Park on Monday 27 November. “Both the football and netball pre-seasons are kicking off on Monday which is exciting after a few months off,” Mr Itter said. “Everyone is keen to reconnect and start working towards a bigger and better 2024. “I’d encourage everyone to get on board with the Lions next season. It’s going to be a huge one for our junior and senior sides across the club and we can’t wait to get stuck in.”

Eight more senior footballers have put pen to paper and recommitted to the Seymour Football Netball Club (SFNC) for the 2024 Goulburn Valley League (GVL) season. The group is headlined by 2022 Morrison Medallist Ben Rigoni, shaping up for a massive season following a VFL debut and a season split between Seymour and the Coburg Lions. Key re-signings include Co-Captain Lachlan Waite and 2023 recruits Nathan Fowler and Ricky Schraven who joined the Lions from Wallan last season. The group of eight is rounded out by senior footballers Ben Cooney, James Wooster, Josh Alford and Alex Elliott. Seymour Lions Football Manager Mitch Itter said the club is hard at work to build on last year’s top two home and away finish. “These re-signings are massive news for the club and show this group is ready to push deep in September next season,” Mr Itter said. “We’ve got a really close bunch of boys, who really enjoy one another's company and are chomping at the bit to get stuck into pre-season. “Last year didn’t finish the way we hoped but we’ve got great depth in our Reserves, a strong senior core and plenty of room for improvement. “You can’t stand still in the GVL. It’s such a quality competition so we’ll be looking to see some big steps forward from everyone heading into 2024.” Mitch Itter said the club would commence pre-season training in late November and welcomed any prospective players to come and get a feel for the club. “There’s a great vibe around the club at the moment and I’d encourage anyone who’s keen to play to come down and get amongst it,” Mr Itter said. “Late November we’ll start pre-season and get some solid sessions in before the Christmas break. “The whole club is raring to go again for 2024 so get on board for next season as we look to go deeper in September. “We’ve also got more re-signings and new recruits on the way. We’re excited to share these in the coming weeks.”

The Seymour Football Netball Club held its Presentation Night at Kings Park on Thursday September 28, celebrating the achievements of players and volunteers across the course of the 2023 Goulburn Valley League (GVL) season. The Lions finished second in the GVL club championship award as a result of all five senior netball and football sides playing finals. GVL Board Chair Jacqui Hudgson and League Operations Manager Jo Spencer were in attendance alongside Tatura’s Elsie Boyer to present the 2023 Wellman Medal to Sarah Szczykulski. Club President Gerard O’Sullivan congratulated players for their on-field achievements during the season. “We had a really great season across all grades and while we didn’t bring home any premierships, everyone involved at the club should be immensely proud of their efforts,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “There are some really talented young players coming up through both the football and netball and we can’t wait to watch their progress over the coming years. “It’s also a fantastic achievement to have the Morrison Medal for the third year in a row and the Wellman Medal being bestowed on some of our club’s champions. “On behalf of the club, I would like to thank the GVL, Tatura and Elsie Boyer in particular for not only their attendance on Thursday night but the professional manner in which they have all conducted themselves over the past week.” Mr O’Sullivan also thanked volunteers who make every training session, matchday and season possible. “While we are incredibly proud of our players, in many ways presentation night is also about the amazing volunteers who keep our club running,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “We were fortunate enough to induct two qualified life members in Sarah Brown and Dylan Scopel as well as Doug McLarty for his selfless service over decades to the club. Doug is incredibly deserving of this honour and we can’t thank him enough for everything he has done for the Lions. “We are lucky to have a great team behind the scenes that put in countless hours to allow our players to enjoy their games and keep the club running smoothly. “Presentation night puts a bit of a full stop on the 2023 season but preparations are well underway for next year. We can’t wait to get back into things and achieve even more together in 2024.” A full list of award winners can be found below. The Seymour Lions have begun re-signing players for the 2024 GVL season, with young guns Huw Jones, Riley Mason, Nathan Beattie and Nic Quigg all recommitting to the club. All four players are under the age of 23 and have been consistent performers across the 2023 season in the Lions senior team. Huw Jones returned from injury this year, joining the leadership group and establishing himself as one of the premier small defenders in the competition, finishing equal 5 th in the club’s Best and Fairest. Jones also took home the Eamonn O’Connor Award, voted by teammates as the player most consistently displaying the values ‘tough, hard and honest.’ Riley Mason has enjoyed his second full season at the club, having played U18s football with the Calder Cannons prior to signing with Seymour. Mason represented the GVL in its interleague clash with the Ovens and Murray League and finished third in the club’s Best and Fairest. Nathan Beattie first played Under 18s football at Kings Park in 2019, already racking up more than 40 seniors games in addition to VFL experience with North Melbourne in 2022. The tough midfielder played every game this season and will be looking to help Seymour take the next step in 2024. The youngest of the quartet, Nic Quigg, has now played his first full season of senior football including a VFL debut with the Coburg Lions earlier in the year. Quigg co-captained the Murray Bushrangers last year, finishing second in their best and fairest. Seymour Lions Senior Coach Ben Davey said the club was thrilled to have the talented youngsters recommitting for the 2024 season. “Preparations are well and truly underway at the club for next year after what was a disappointing finals campaign,” Mr Davey said. “These boys are absolutely crucial to our success moving forward and we’re delighted they are going round again with a real clear vision of where we’re headed. “All four of them bring something unique to our side. We’re incredibly lucky to have such young players with already well-developed leadership skills, experience at VFL level, and other fantastic attributes. “Our list is taking shape next year and we hope to have plenty more announcements in the coming weeks as we re-sign players for next year. “There’s a desire across our whole club to learn from our finals experience this season and take the next step in 2024. We can’t wait to get back on the track and get into training again.”

On the eve of finals, the Seymour Lions have locked in their 2024 Senior football and A Grade coaches with Ben Davey and Ellie Fuhrmeister recommitting for another season. With all senior football and netball sides having secured a finals berth, the reappointments come off the back of an unprecedented clean sweep of netball premierships in 2022 and Seymour’s two senior football sides finishing the home and away season in the top two. Both coaches have built strong records at the club with Ben Davey a dual senior premiership player in 1991 and 2005 in addition to coaching a Reserves premiership in 2006. Following his playing career, Davey spent time coaching at the Murray Bushrangers and North Melbourne. Fuhrmeister is a three-time A grade premiership player and GVL representative with experience coaching every senior and junior grade at the club, all while having played more than 200 games at the Lions. Seymour President Gerard O’Sullivan said the club was thrilled to have both coaches recommit for the 2024 season. “Ben and Ellie have played a massive role in our recent success and we’re delighted they’re back on board for 2024,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “Our netball program has been incredibly well run and coached, evidenced by the remarkable three premierships we took home from Deakin last year. “Ben has put together a really special group of footballers and we look forward to them having a red-hot crack in September. “We couldn’t be happier to have Ben and Ellie back next year while being incredibly excited about what’s to come across the finals series.” Ellie Fuhrmeister said she was looking forward to a big September campaign and the ongoing development of the club’s netballers. “We’ve got a huge finals series coming up for the netballers with plenty of stiff competition across the league,” Ms Fuhrmeister said. “We’re coming into the next few months extremely motivated and there’s no room to get complacent. We’ve got a great group and I’m excited about what we can achieve together. “I’m looking forward to continuing to support our junior sides, watch their development and support them as they become senior netballers.” Senior coach Ben Davey said the club was in a strong position, with only one game lost between the Seniors and Reserves in the 2023 Home and Away season. “We’ve got a really strong young group of footballers who enjoy each other’s company. It makes the club a great place to be,” Mr Davey said. “Importantly our depth and numbers across the reserves means we’ve got plenty of blokes around the club who can step up to senior footy at any time. “Everyone is pulling in the same direction, and I know our senior side has got some entertaining and hopefully very successful footy ahead of it. “No matter what happens this September, I’m excited to be back on board for 2024 and pushing this group to keep improving.”

The Seymour Lions fourth annual Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) afternoon tea has raised more than $13,000 for breast cancer research, with a total figure still to be finalised. With nearly 200 tickets purchased for ‘Sarah’s Day,’ in honour of the late Sarah Locke who sadly lost her courageous battle with breast cancer just over a year ago, Kings Park was awash in pink to support the worthy cause. Seymour Lions President Gerard O’Sullivan paid tribute to the Locke family for their work to support the afternoon. “The Locke family are extremely dear to the club, Stuart is a life member, Chloe and Sophie have played here since they were kids and as a netballer and volunteer Sarah was a constant around Kings Park,” Ms O’Sullivan said. “Through such a difficult period the Lockes have been determined advocates for breast cancer research, raising awareness and being so giving with their time and energy. “Sophie is doing amazing work as an ambassador for BCNA and Stu Locke’s pink bus has been easy to spot around town. “We can’t thank them enough for allowing us to honour Sarah today and we hope the afternoon has done her legacy in our community justice.” Mr O’Sullivan thanked the club and community for rallying behind the event. “The amount of work put in to get this event of the ground is amazing and I’d like to thank everyone involved on behalf of the Seymour Lions and the broader community,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “It’s an honour to be part of a such a selfless community and a club where people never hesitate to help out the town, particularly over the last 12 months with a difficult flood clean up and then events like this. “The Tatura Football Netball Club deserve a massive thank you for being so flexible and throwing their support behind the day. We can’t thank them enough. “Everyone across our community has been touched by cancer in some way and it’s just incredible to see how giving everyone is and how supportive this town is. “This is what footy clubs are all about. Supporting one another, bringing people together and strengthening communities. We’re determined to keep growing this day in honour of Sarah and raise as much money as we can to support breast cancer research. “From everyone at the Seymour Lions, thank you for your support and we can’t wait to do this all again next year.”

Seymour Lions Co-Captain Dylan Scopel is set to play his 200 th senior game this weekend as Seymour takes on Tatura at Kings Park, becoming just the 17th player to do so in the club’s history and the first since Matt O’Keefe in 2017. Scopel made his senior debut for the club in 2010, playing six games while splitting the rest of the season with the Lions’ Under 18s side. Since then, Scopel has been a reliable presence in the senior side, captain since 2021 and regularly finishing at the pointy end of club’s Best & Fairest award. Seymour Lions President, Gerard O’Sullivan, congratulated Scopel on the achievement and highlighted his importance to the club over more than a decade of service. “Dylan has been an incredible player for the Lions and has really set the standard over the past few years,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “We’re incredibly lucky to have him holding down the backline every week, providing leadership and run from defence. “Not only has Dylan been a tremendous Lion on field, he’s always been willing to lend a hand around the club and has helped us develop an environment everyone wants to be a part of. “This qualifies Dylan as a life member and establishes him as one of the great players we’ve had the pleasure of watching through the club’s illustrious history.” Mr O’Sullivan encouraged everyone to get down to Kings Park on Saturday for what will be a massive day for the Lions. “I’d encourage everyone across the region to get to Kings Park to celebrate Dylan’s career alongside another really important event for the club,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “We will be holding our fourth annual breast cancer fundraiser, with all funds raised going towards Breast Cancer Network Australia. “Tickets can be bought online with the event kicking off at 2pm. We’ll also be honouring Sarah Locke who sadly passed just over a year ago after a courageous battle with breast cancer. “For us, this weekend is about celebrating all the amazing people across our community, enjoying each other’s company and hopefully some big wins across the board for Dylan’s 200 th .”
