Lions continue re-signing key players for 2024

Eight more senior footballers have put pen to paper and recommitted to the Seymour Football Netball Club (SFNC) for the 2024 Goulburn Valley League (GVL) season.

The group is headlined by 2022 Morrison Medallist Ben Rigoni, shaping up for a massive season following a VFL debut and a season split between Seymour and the Coburg Lions.

Key re-signings include Co-Captain Lachlan Waite and 2023 recruits Nathan Fowler and Ricky Schraven who joined the Lions from Wallan last season.

The group of eight is rounded out by senior footballers Ben Cooney, James Wooster, Josh Alford and Alex Elliott.

Seymour Lions Football Manager Mitch Itter said the club is hard at work to build on last year’s top two home and away finish.

“These re-signings are massive news for the club and show this group is ready to push deep in September next season,” Mr Itter said.

“We’ve got a really close bunch of boys, who really enjoy one another's company and are chomping at the bit to get stuck into pre-season.

“Last year didn’t finish the way we hoped but we’ve got great depth in our Reserves, a strong senior core and plenty of room for improvement.

“You can’t stand still in the GVL. It’s such a quality competition so we’ll be looking to see some big steps forward from everyone heading into 2024.”

Mitch Itter said the club would commence pre-season training in late November and welcomed any prospective players to come and get a feel for the club.

“There’s a great vibe around the club at the moment and I’d encourage anyone who’s keen to play to come down and get amongst it,” Mr Itter said.

“Late November we’ll start pre-season and get some solid sessions in before the Christmas break.

“The whole club is raring to go again for 2024 so get on board for next season as we look to go deeper in September.

“We’ve also got more re-signings and new recruits on the way. We’re excited to share these in the coming weeks.”

It proved a difficult first term with Seymour trailing at the break before they flicked the switch and dominated the remainder of the game. Back to back four goal quarters through the middle of the game put the Lions in an unbeatable position at three quarter time, allowing the boys to wrap up a great win away from home. Sam Fuhrmeister stood above the rest to finish best on ground, taking crucial intercept and contested marks all day to provide drive from the defensive end. Cooper Lubeck and Regan Gardner were superb through the middle of the ground as Joel Durham continued his strong form in the ruck. In the forward line, Jack Radford kicked another bag of 5 goals, to see him sitting in a comfortable position atop the Reserves GVL goalkickers table. A slow start in the first quarter saw the Lions give up a three goal advantage, one they worked hard at pegging back through the middle quarters. Despite dominating play in the third quarter, with 9 scoring shots to 3, some inaccurate kicking cost the Lions a chance to have their noses in front going into the final term. Echuca proved too good in the last, running over the top to claim the win. Nathan Beattie, Jack Murphy and James Wooster remained consistent, winning plenty of ball through the middle of the ground, while Lewis Lubeck worked up the field and played a strong game in his 50th for the club. Darcy Giles provided tremendous pressure around the ball, showing fantastic work rate. The Lions get the chance to put their best foot forward against the undefeated Kyabram at home this weekend. After half time the Lions put on the after burners, kicking five unanswered goals in the final term in an impressive win. Cooper Lubeck and Will Le Deux were dominant through the middle, while Tyler Clarke was prominent across the ground.
