Murphy and Rigoni celebrate milestones
Seymour Lions midfielders Jack Murphy and Ben Rigoni have celebrated individual milestones in Seymour’s win over Tatura on Saturday.
Jack Murphy, who won Seymour’s Best and Fairest award in 2022, alongside the Shepparton News Award for best player in the GVL in 2022, played his 100th senior game yesterday. Murphy has continued his strong form in 2023, balancing on field duties with an assistant coaching role.
Ben Rigoni, the GVL’s reigning Morrison Medallist played his 50th senior game for the Lions, having spent time across the season playing in the VFL with the Coburg Lions.
Seymour President Gerard O’Sullivan congratulated the players on their milestones.
“Jack and Ben have consistently sat amongst the top players in the competition. It’s great to know we’ve got them running out together most weekends,” Mr O’Sullivan said.
“Both these boys have experience playing in the VFL, following their time coming up through the under 18s at Seymour.
“Jack has taken on extra responsibility this season as a playing assistant coach, and we look forward to watching him continue to develop his coaching skills.
“These milestones are testament to their dedication and loyalty to the club. We hope there are many more to come and hopefully a few big performances throughout September.”

The Seymour Lions are excited to announce a series of school holiday netball clinics for young players looking to sharpen their skills, build confidence, and have a whole lot of fun on the court. Designed for passionate junior netballers from across the region, these full-day clinics offer a fantastic opportunity to learn from some of the best. For just $50 per participant, attendees will be coached by Seymour’s Head Coach, Casey Adamson, who brings a wealth of professional experience to the court. With a strong background in elite-level netball, Casey is eager to share her insights, techniques, and love for the game with the next generation of netball stars. She will be joined by a selection of Seymour’s top senior netballers, who will lend their skills and enthusiasm to the sessions, making it a truly valuable and inspiring experience for every participant. The clinics will be held at Kings Park Netball Courts and run from 9:00am to 3:00pm. The Seymour Lions’ annual Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) fundraiser, Sarah’s Day, has raised a phenomenal $16,000 for people affected by breast cancer, ensuring they receive the very best care, treatment and support. The day is an opportunity for the Seymour community to remember all those impacted by cancer and to honour the memory of Sarah Locke, a long-time and passionate Lion who lost her battle with breast cancer in August 2022. More than 150 people bought tickets to enjoy an afternoon of camaraderie, community and laughter, with raffle prizes donated by a range of local businesses. $8,000 was raised on the day, with the donation matched, ensuring $16,000 will go to support Australians with breast cancer. Seymour President, Peter Elliott, said the Club was once again blown away by the support shown by the community. “Sarah’s Day is a day everyone at our Club looks forward to. It’s a great chance to come together as a community and raise funds for an important cause,” he said. “We couldn’t be more grateful for the support provided by local businesses that donated prizes, and our incredible volunteers who organised the event. “Once again, Tatura Football Netball Club got behind the day in a big way, and we really value the bonds built with another fantastic Club. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone for making the day a success. It proved a difficult first term with Seymour trailing at the break before they flicked the switch and dominated the remainder of the game. Back to back four goal quarters through the middle of the game put the Lions in an unbeatable position at three quarter time, allowing the boys to wrap up a great win away from home. Sam Fuhrmeister stood above the rest to finish best on ground, taking crucial intercept and contested marks all day to provide drive from the defensive end. Cooper Lubeck and Regan Gardner were superb through the middle of the ground as Joel Durham continued his strong form in the ruck. In the forward line, Jack Radford kicked another bag of 5 goals, to see him sitting in a comfortable position atop the Reserves GVL goalkickers table. A slow start in the first quarter saw the Lions give up a three goal advantage, one they worked hard at pegging back through the middle quarters. Despite dominating play in the third quarter, with 9 scoring shots to 3, some inaccurate kicking cost the Lions a chance to have their noses in front going into the final term. Echuca proved too good in the last, running over the top to claim the win. Nathan Beattie, Jack Murphy and James Wooster remained consistent, winning plenty of ball through the middle of the ground, while Lewis Lubeck worked up the field and played a strong game in his 50th for the club. Darcy Giles provided tremendous pressure around the ball, showing fantastic work rate. The Lions get the chance to put their best foot forward against the undefeated Kyabram at home this weekend.
