Seymour community raises $13,000 for breast cancer

The Seymour Lions fourth annual Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) afternoon tea has raised more than $13,000 for breast cancer research, with a total figure still to be finalised.

With nearly 200 tickets purchased for ‘Sarah’s Day,’ in honour of the late Sarah Locke who sadly lost her courageous battle with breast cancer just over a year ago, Kings Park was awash in pink to support the worthy cause.

Seymour Lions President Gerard O’Sullivan paid tribute to the Locke family for their work to support the afternoon.

“The Locke family are extremely dear to the club, Stuart is a life member, Chloe and Sophie have played here since they were kids and as a netballer and volunteer Sarah was a constant around Kings Park,” Ms O’Sullivan said.

“Through such a difficult period the Lockes have been determined advocates for breast cancer research, raising awareness and being so giving with their time and energy.

“Sophie is doing amazing work as an ambassador for BCNA and Stu Locke’s pink bus has been easy to spot around town.

“We can’t thank them enough for allowing us to honour Sarah today and we hope the afternoon has done her legacy in our community justice.”

Mr O’Sullivan thanked the club and community for rallying behind the event.

“The amount of work put in to get this event of the ground is amazing and I’d like to thank everyone involved on behalf of the Seymour Lions and the broader community,” Mr O’Sullivan said.

“It’s an honour to be part of a such a selfless community and a club where people never hesitate to help out the town, particularly over the last 12 months with a difficult flood clean up and then events like this.

“The Tatura Football Netball Club deserve a massive thank you for being so flexible and throwing their support behind the day. We can’t thank them enough.

“Everyone across our community has been touched by cancer in some way and it’s just incredible to see how giving everyone is and how supportive this town is.

“This is what footy clubs are all about. Supporting one another, bringing people together and strengthening communities. We’re determined to keep growing this day in honour of Sarah and raise as much money as we can to support breast cancer research.

“From everyone at the Seymour Lions, thank you for your support and we can’t wait to do this all again next year.”

While the girls were able to generate plenty of turnovers, they weren’t able to capitalise on these. Ella was crucial in the game and played with great intensity. Paige Cooper worked hard in the defensive circle, hunting down all the long balls and taking great, clean intercepts. Sophie Butterworth shot 37 of 45 goals in today’s game. Her precision and accuracy was on point and she worked hard to get front position. The Seymour Football Netball Club (SFNC) has announced its first re-signings for 2026 with a group of five key players putting pen to paper. Current Senior Co-Coach Jack Murphy headlines the group, returning next season after a dominant year so far. Fellow midfielders Nathan Beattie, reigning Senior Best & Fairest winner, and Nic Quigg, VFL listed inside mid, have also both signed on the dotted line. Key forward Nathan Fowler will bring up 50 Senior games in his next outing for the Lions and will be back for his fourth year at The Den in 2026. Rounding out the five is Huw Jones, who has missed the entire 2024 season after a knee reconstruction, but will be ready to go come Round 1 2026. SFNC President Peter Elliott said these re-signings demonstrate the strong belief within the playing group about the list's potential. “We’re thrilled to have these five boys back on board for next season. It sends a clear message that we’re serious about challenging the very best teams in the league,” Mr Elliott said. “Jack Murphy has been outstanding as our Senior Co-Coach this year and his passion is unmatched. Nathan Beattie and Nic Quigg are star midfielders, and having all three on the park together will make us formidable in the middle. “Nathan Fowler is a true heart and soul player and a key presence up forward. We also can’t wait to see Huwy running out again in 2026. “While we’re out of finals contention this year, we’re focused on finishing the season strong and look forward to announcing more re-signings in the coming weeks.”
